Anti is the second EP by Autechre released on Warp Records. It was originally released on September 3rd, 1994.[1]
History
After the success of the 1992 Castlemorton Common Festival, the biggest illegal rave in the UK, the UK parliament responded with the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 c. 33 which in part was targetting the rise of illegal rave culture. [2][3] In Chapter V, sections 63-66 "Powers in relation to raves", the main aim of the sections was to set out how raves should be broken up. At the start of section 63, it provided a definition for what consituted a rave.
(1)This section applies to a gathering on land in the open air of 20 or more persons (whether or not trespassers) at which amplified music is played during the night (with or without intermissions) and is such as, by reason of its loudness and duration and the time at which it is played, is likely to cause serious distress to the inhabitants of the locality; and for this purpose—
(a) such a gathering continues during intermissions in the music and, where the gathering extends over several days, throughout the period during which amplified music is played at night (with or without intermissions); and
(b) “music” includes sounds wholly or predominantly characterised by the emission of a succession of repetitive beats. [4]
Autechre strongly opposed the bill. For an feature in NME, they discussed how "Nobody really knows what's going to happen if the Criminal Justice Bill becomes law, [...] that's what's so scary about it. Why on earth do you want to ban music with repetative beats?"[5] In an interview with Pete Lawrence, Sean noted that "The clause that irritated me was the one about repetitive beats...it's the single most idiotic legislative move I've ever seen, but impossible to enforce. It's easy to get around - you simply don't quantize your bass drum, you play it in live."[6]
When Anti was released, it came with a warning label:
Warning. Lost and Djarum contain repetitive beats.
We advise you not to play these tracks if the Criminal Justice Bill becomes law. Flutter has been programmed in such a way that no bars contain identical beats and can therefore be played at both forty five and thirty three revolutions under the proposed new law. However, we advise DJs to have a lawyer and a musicologist present at all times to confirm the non-repetitive nature of the music in the event of police harassment.
Important.
By breaking the seal, you accept full responsibility for any consequential action resulting from product's use, as playing the music contained within these recordings may be interpreted as opposition to the Criminal Justice and Public Order Bill.
The sticker went around to the back similar to a seal with extra information explaining that all profits would go to Liberty.[7][8]

- "Flutter" was previewed on July 24th, 1994 at a Socialist Worker's Party-run march. [9]
- "Flutter" was designed such that it can be played at "at both forty five and thirty three revolutions" as said on the sticker, however the CD and digital version stuck to the 45 rpm version. [10]
- The track consists of an Roland R8 for both drums sounds and sequencing for both precussion and melody, QuadraVerb for delay and reverb, and an EPS sampler for the melody sounds. [11][12][13] The sequencing on the R8 was played in and completed within a day. [14][5]
- In URB Magazine Issue 42, May 1995, the writer mentioned that Flutter contains "a string of 65 distinct drum patterns."
- A "slow burnt out version of Flutter" was performed at Sankey's in Manchester. [15]

- ↑ Sean Twitch AMA, July 2022. "Is that something you miss about composing songs like Flutter? I mean no, because I’ll be doing it if I missed it. I've still got the gear, so there's nothing stopping me getting the EPS and the R8 out and doing Flutter 2, you know. I just don't feel like doing it, so. But you are welcome to have a go if you want, you know. Just get the sound effects card for the R8, sample some kind of arbitrary sound like a vocal or something, and just knock out your own version of Flutter. I think there's like a Quadraverb on there as well, so you might need that. Not hard though. If you want it, just make it."
- ↑ Sean Twitch AMA, June 2022. "How much time it took to sequence Flutter with the R8? Just like a day. Not long, just played in. You can do the rolls with the pressure on the pad and all that, right, so. And yeah, the pitches. You can do with the slider so you kind of, you know, you write in the pattern first and then you do the pitches with the slider sort of thing. You do it a few times until it sounds good and then I say it's done right, so. It's very fast and that's partly why I used the R8 so long because it's just so fast to write on. It's like much faster than doing those kind of rolls in Cubase. We had to draw them in. You just do your hand on the pad like the pressure. Just change the pressure. You can do it on an MPC, you know, same thing so."
- ↑ Sean Twitch AMA, June 2022. "Sankey's set. My goodness, yes. [laughs] No way, someone was there, yeah. Yeah, Flutter, fucking, we did a really kind of slow burnt out version of Flutter in that Sankey's set and it's pretty good. It's, like, quite different to the other ones. It's like playing it at 33 except the sounds that's a lot down, you know. But yeah, that was fun. But yeah, I've got a DAT of that somewhere in Manchester, so."
