AE_2022-, previously AE_LIVE 2022-, and otherwise known as 2022 dash[1] is a compilation of nineteen soundboard recordings taken from live shows performed from 2022 onwards as part of the twentytwentytwo tour.[2] The first batch was released on August 10th, 2023, and the second on November 4th, 2024.
History
Development
Initial planning for a new tour started in late 2019 for dates in late 2020-early 2021, before the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020 put all plans on hold.[3][4][5] Sean mentioned that he spent that time reworking the back end of their rig, getting interested in MC (multi-channel audio in Max), physical modelling[6] (such as Modalys), and scratching (as seen on Gescom's AMKS_1).[7]
During a mixlr stream on March 21st, 2020, Sean mentioned that the live set was 99% complete, requiring just the intro to be completed.[8] By mid-2022, Sean noted that, on his side, he had about three and a half hours of total material prepared that may or may not be shown.[9] In late 2023, Sean gave an update on Mastodon that the material ended up becoming one long track they just kept adding onto. At that point, it was "about 4 hours long so far and growing steadily", noting it was the "most interesting thing we’ve done in ages from our POV." [10] In an interview in October 2024, they mentioned that "we could keep [this project] going for another ten years."[1]
The main equipment used to perform is two M1[6] Macs running Max/MSP, Kenton Killamix controllers, Apogee Symphony Desktop and Apogee Element 24.[11][12][13][14][15] Both Sean and Rob have different versions of their Max rig; Sean sends nightly builds to Rob, to which Rob adds his own additions.[16][17][18] In 2024, they got four custom-made Killamix Minis.[19] Initially, mixing was done using the Mackie Onyx12,[11] but since Brussels24 they've been using Sound Devices 888.[14][20] For recording with the 888, they have "two mains, two spares and two mons (adjustable using the headphone pot) going to 3 stereo DIs" with separate recordings of Sean and Rob's computers alongside a mixed version.[15][20] For final mixing of the soundboards for release, Sean also listed using "a couple of Meyer UPMs and USW-112Ps" as monitors.[21]
The Max rig itself (seen best in the December 15th, 2022 demo recording) consists of 16 channels with six different slots each (one sequencer, one synthesizer, four effect units) and 4 bus channels with five slots each (one sequencer, four effects units).[22] Between both different rigs, they have a total of 32 channels available.[23] Modules are dynamically loaded into slots (which each have two [poly~] objects)[24] via a global "pattstorage-addressing copy patch" and preloading.[25][26] The general development process was described as "make a cell, save it, come back the next day, tweak it a bit."[27][28] During a show, they traverse through roughly 60-90 'cells' in a prefered order, although sometimes they skip over or extend cells.[29][30]
In a mixlr stream on March 30th, 2020, while quickly skimming through their jams folder, Sean showed off a few seconds of the then unknown in-development live material (segments #2, #3 and #5). In December 2022, Sean posted two Max demos to Mastodon; one on December 10th and one on December 15th, which were both bits of segments #29 and #26 respectively. In 2023, two more demos were posted, with July 26th's "Markov Chain"[31] and December 16th's "Fuckery"[32] for segments #38 and #42/48. Months later, audio-only demos - September 23, 2024's “playing with stereo[33] and January 7th, 2025's “quick gong jam”[34] - were shown for segments #53 and #55.
Tour
On March 9th, 2022, the twentytwentytwo tour was officially announced with five shows in Barcelona, Milan, Helsinki, London, and Turin across 2022.[35]The Barcelona22 show at Primavera, due to issues of negotiating the rights to the soundboard from Primavera as well as messing up the recording, was left off the release.[36] At Helsinki22, small glitches such as pops and dropouts appeared early into the show and got progressively more distracting as the show went on. A possible explanation is that the venue's subwoofer setup, which was poorly set up and possibly worsened by the performance's use of heavy sub-bass, experienced a coil short circuit leading to the malfunctions.[37][38] The raw soundboard recording ("AE_LIVE_HELSINKI_110922_LTD") was sent out to attendees as an apology, and was later re-released with proper mastering.[39]
twentytwentyfour was announced with dates in Paris, Rennes, Barcelona, and Madrid, on October 27th, 2023.[40] Madrid's venue was confirmed on the 30th, coinciding with the general ticket sale at 10:00 CET.[41] New shows were later added for Brussels, The Hague, and Lisbon (second show since the first show already sold out before the announcement) on December 13th, 2023.[42] The last few dates for Krems/Vienna, Lyon, Oslo, Stockholm, Riga, and Copenhagen were confirmed on March 22, 2024.[43][44] DenHaag24 was not released because they forgot to hit record.[45]
Arranged by now wave, Autechre was booked for an exclusive UK show in Manchester for February 22nd, 2025, which was announced on September 18, 2024.[46] About 8 minutes into Manchester25, it catastrophically failed due to the sub of the venue rattling the USB out of Sean's interface[47]. After a 16-minute interruption, the show picked up from where it was interrupted.
On January 21st, 2025, twentytwentyfive was announced with four shows in Amsterdam, Helsinki, Warsaw, and Berlin.[48] On February 26th, nineteen North American shows in October, six UK shows in November, and one additional August Reykjavik show, were all announced, with pre-sale starting on the 27th.[49] Later on March 28th, the North American leg was updated: three venue changes, three dates with a second show added, and the addition of three new shows in New Orleans, Louisville, and Washington.[50] Saint Louis for October 19th was quietly added to the roster.
Two twentytwentysix Japan shows were announced on June 17th, 2025.[51]
Release
"AE_LIVE_HELSINKI_110922_LTD", which was an unmastered soundboard of the Helsinki22 show, was released early exclusively to attendants of the show due to technical issues during the show.[39]
The first batch of live sets was first casually mentioned by Sean in a brief reply on June 17th, 2023, that the audio was done and they were just waiting for Ian of The Designers Republic to do the artworks.[52] On August 7th, 2023, Warp sent out an announcement to sign up to Autechre's newsletter.[53] The following day, AE_LIVE 2022- was officially announced,[54] and seven 2022 shows from "AE_LIVE_MILAN_010722" to "AE_LIVE_TURIN_041122" were released individually and as a compilation on the 10th.[55] A limited run of 250 AE_LIVE_Print 2022- posters were also announced for pre-orders on the 24th, which quickly sold out.[56][57]
On October 25th, 2024, Warp again sent out a newsletter sign-up announcement, with 12 dates listed.[58][59] On November 4th, 2024, twelve sets from "AE_MELBOURNE_250823" to "AE_LYON_070524" were released individually and added onto the now renamed compilation AE_2022-, dropping the "LIVE" prefix both in the compilation title and set names.[60] Sean noted that the idea came from Warp to drop the LIVE part of the naming convention.[61] The compilation was later put up on Bleep and Bandcamp on December 3rd.[62][63]
Analysis
Main analysis by EnergyIsMassiveLight and Zythion. Fan titles taken from fan-edit TTT-.[64] Officially released sets are highlighted in bold while the unreleased sets with bootleg recordings are italicized. Tables have be split for compactness.
Due to the nature of performances, the start and ends of a set may abridge or overextend in a way which don't cleanly fit in the segment splits.
The timestamps below are still a work in progress, thus are not final and are subject to change.

Trivia
- The CAT number, WARP444, was likely specifically requested by Autechre, to reference the song "444" off their first album, Incunabula.
- The 2023 compilation cover consisted of all seven individual set art from the first batch overlaid on top of each other.
- A variant of "7th slip" is present in Rob's side of the live set.[69]
- When asked which 2022 show's crowd smelt the best so far, Sean replied "the italians obviously" at Milan 2022.[70]
- A font used across promotional material is Circular Mono.

- ↑ 6.0 6.1 Sean Twitch AMA, June 2022. "“Do you like the new Mac chip situation? Is it any different to work on compared to the old CPU?” Yes. So my patch was using about 75, 80% towards the end of last year or the year before, whenever it was I got it, and then, yeah, I got the M1 and then it was just flying! 30%, just flying! Just absolutely insane! So there's no turning back now I'm fucked because I'm filling it up already. Loads of Live physmod things, and things that were a bit, you know, expensive. So yeah, I love it. Just amazing, kind of a little bit too much if anything, and the disking out speeds are amazing. The transitions are all super tight. The timing's super tight. All the control rate stuff is super tight. So yeah, I think if you're using Max and you've got an M1, you're basically living the dream at this point. it's just insane."
- ↑ Sean Twitch AMA, June 2022. "Basically when COVID hit, I had a lot of time on my hands to rebuild a lot of it. So it's, yeah, it’s a lot of it you wouldn't even notice because a lot of it's just porting things to Gen that didn't need to be ported but just because I wanted a bit more control, and that led me off on loads of tangents because once you start building basic things like oscillators, you get a bit mad with all the options. So yeah, that happened and then I got heavily into MC, and then that happened. And then I built a lot more [physical] modeling stuff, and I did that scratching thing that we used on that Gescom thing that we've done about just over a year ago. And then did that and then, and then, yeah the set sort of grew out of all that tech basically. So sty listically, it's not that far off what we've been doing for the last few years because I think we're still in the same sort of place mentally. But, tech wise, the underlying, the kind of back end stuff is all fresh."

- ↑ Sean Twitch AMA, June 2022. "[...] I mean some, they will share elements and the probably, I mean in all likelihood it'll be mostly similar material but there's a bunch of material that's not aired yet. That's because we've had too long to work on this fucking set, right, so. Least my part of the set is, I don't know, like three and a half hours of stuff, so I don't know how much of it will end up using."

- ↑ 11.0 11.1 Sean Twitch AMA, July 2022. "Can u describe the live setup of the last gigs, laptop, controllers, souncard, thx I mean you know, two, I mean the latest ones are just two M1 Macs, Kenton Killamix controllers, two interfaces; I've got an Apogee Symphony Desktop, Rob's using the Apogee Element 24. The mixer is like a little Mackie Onyx12 channel thing just because it fits on a plane easily, and it's easier to get around. And it's replaceable if it breaks, you know, it's not, we're not relying on some esoteric mixer being found by the promoter at the last minute, so. Because that's always a consideration, you know? There's only the controllers really that be hard to source. So we often carry spares like if we're on a tour bus, we'll have spares of the controllers we’ll source."
- ↑ Sean Twitch AMA, June 2022. "What's your live setup nowadays? Two Macs, and these Kenton Killamix things, and a couple of interfaces."
- ↑ Hanalgig AMA, July 2022. "Tebbisimo: [...] What audio interface you using on the live sets ATM? [...] XH HX: i'm using apogee symphony desktop lately which i really rate but before that was using apogee element 24 (also good but harder to get now) and before that was using RME ADI2 converter (had to stop since apple borked the optical port but i loved that thing). i also got a MOTU M2 which is mad value for ESS sabre converters if u want something cheapish"

He's got a fully up-to-date version of what I'm doing all the time, so he gets nightly, almost, builds, yeah. So, that happened. I think he can run my rig in his house so he knows exactly what it'll do, but he doesn't know quite how I'm gonna play it on the night and so I'll be doing surprising things with it and it'll be reacting to him with his controllers, so it's a kind of, yeah, it's very much an intuitive thing."

- ↑ Sean Twitch AMA, June 2022. "Yeah, so like those three module types are arranged in channels, So like each channel has like, I think, six slots, yeah, it has like a sequencer, a synth and then four effects units on every channel, and there's 16 channels, and they're constantly changing and there are four bus channels as well that don't have sequences. No, sorry, that don't have synths on, but they just have sequences and effects units. So they have the four effects units in the sequences and there's four of those bus channels and they can be routed into each other and stuff, so that's it. So in total, there are 68 slots. Yeah."
- ↑ Sean Twitch AMA, June 2022. "But with this set, it was written with both of us running 16 channels each now."

- ↑ Sean Twitch AMA, July 2022. "“How'd you deal with preset management live?” It's all pattr, so like, yeah it's all pattr now. It used to be pattr and then presets. So the global stuff was a pattr and then the stuff in the modules was presets, but it got too unwieldy. I had to build, rebuild it all with pattr. Plus I like being able to morph them because morphing is just tons of fun, innit? So, see it's all pattr and then I built a thing that where I can name them. So there's like a little box, you just type the name in and click enter and it just saves it with that name. So then I have like a new menu with all the names in. I found that loads easier to work with than numbers. So yeah, it's pattr all the way down, but it's pattr, it's like a global pattr and then each module has its own pattrs because the modules are loaded dynamically. I couldn't have pattr, the global pattr reaching into the modules, if you know what I mean. so they all have to have their own pattr storage in each module. But that's okay, you know?"

So they were trying to get broadcast, they were trying to record it, you know? Obviously we're thinking about releasing them, so we didn't want to okay it. We ended up fucking up the recording anyway, so it wouldn't have mattered."
