Anti is the second EP by Autechre released on Warp Records. It was originally released on September 3rd, 1994.[1]
History
After the success of the 1992 Castlemorton Common Festival, the biggest illegal rave in the UK, the UK parliament responded with the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 c. 33 which in part was targetting the rise of illegal rave culture.[2][3] In Chapter V, sections 63-66 "Powers in relation to raves", the main aim of the sections was to set out how raves should be broken up. At the start of section 63, it provided a definition for what consituted a rave, with a definition for the type of music played at those raves.
(b) “music” includes sounds wholly or predominantly characterised by the emission of a succession of repetitive beats.[4]
Autechre strongly opposed the bill. For an feature in NME, they discussed how "Nobody really knows what's going to happen if the Criminal Justice Bill becomes law, [...] that's what's so scary about it. Why on earth do you want to ban music with repetative beats?"[5] In an interview with Pete Lawrence, Sean noted that "The clause that irritated me was the one about repetitive beats...it's the single most idiotic legislative move I've ever seen, but impossible to enforce. It's easy to get around - you simply don't quantize your bass drum, you play it in live."[6]
When Anti was released, it came with a label warning that "Lost" and "Djarum" were not to be played if the bill became law, however "Flutter" was otherwise compliant since it had "been programmed in such a way that no bars contain identical beats". The sticker wrapped around (acting as a seal), with the back explaining that all profits would go to Liberty, and that "Autechre is politically non-aligned. This is about personal freedom".[7][8]
Part of the material originated from live show material written while touring.[9]
