During the [[Sean Twitch AMA, June 2022]], Sean answered a few questions regarding the live material after having performed the first show of the twentytwentytwo tour. On August 7th, 2023, Warp sent out an announcement to sign up for to the newsletter. The following day, ''AE_LIVE 2022-'' was officially announced, and the first batch of 2022 shows from Milan to Turin was released individually and as a compilation on the 10th. The hyphen added to the end of the title indicated the possibility of future sets being added at a later date.

In a Mastodon thread late 2023, Sean gave an update that the material ended up becoming one long track they just kept adding onto. The snare4ml shown is an example snare instrument from [https://forum.ircam.fr/projects/detail/modalys/ Modalys for Max], with Modalys also appearing in the 15th demo for its custom-made clarinet instrument.<ref>Observation by sfn / Davide Vin</ref>

'''<big>The timestamps below are still a work in progress, thus are not final and are subject to change.</big>''' <!-- possible changes + notes
---
it's good to have no naming convention for this but the numbering is very flawed that it is destructive to previous iterations when any changes need to be made. i haven't come up with a good solution that doesn't involve giving unique names which is the whole thing i don't wanna do
---
11: timestamps should be reviewed, spot where it's split is somewhat ambigious
---
26: the whole segment i have seems really well split but the hihat stuff could be split off into a second part perhaps since it's so discrete, and it would also bring down the time of dublin from being 10 minutes. my "no splits should be going over 8 minutes" policy in full force there lol. unsure
---
32: no changes, just need to standardise where it starts.
33: the suspended part is too ambiguous, and closer inspection between sydney and brussels shows completely different sections at the splits. might move it to after the acid squwel suspend
34: main thing annoying me is the acid funk thing/interlude thing from sydney, it's the most glaring issues that a segment is THAT mismatched compared to the rest, if i include the outro to 33 after shifting that one forward that should probably help.
35: but if i do that above, then the explosive restart is orphaned, and there are two options. 1) make a 1-2min segment its own thing :/ or 2) merge it with 35 and shift everything AGAIN :/ but i think i might do the latter to be the start of 35 since it is otherwise pretty short and can handle like a minute or two extra for the start. see the second proper segment of set d where a similar thing occurs.  -->

AE_2022-, previously AE_LIVE 2022-, and otherwise known as 2022 dash[1] or the twentytwentytwo tour,[2] is a compilation of nineteen soundboard recordings taken from live shows performed between 2022 and 2024. The first batch was released on August 10th, 2023, and the second on November 4th, 2024.

History

On March 9th, 2022, the twentytwentytwo tour was officially announced.[3]

During the Sean Twitch AMA, June 2022, Sean answered a few questions regarding the live material after having performed the first show of the twentytwentytwo tour. The tour was initially planned to be held in 2020, before the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the tour. Sean mentioned that on his end, he spent the time reworking the back end, getting interested in MC (multi-channel audio in Max), physical modelling[4] (such as Modalys), and scratching (as seen on Gescom's AMKS_1).[5] The end product was Sean noting that, on his side, he had about three and a half hours of total material prepared that may or may not be shown.[6]

The first show of the tour was performed at Primavera in Barcelona on June 3rd, 2022, however, due to issues of negotiating the rights to the soundboard from Primavera as well as messing up the recording, it was left off the release.[7] The show in Den Haag on April 5th, 2024 also had a failed recording because they forgot to hit record.[8]

"AE_LIVE_HELSINKI_110922_LTD" was released early exclusively to attendants of the show on October 4th, 2022, due to technical issues during the show.[9] Small glitches such as pops and audio dropouts appeared early into the show and got progressively more distracting as the show went on. A possible explanation is that the venue's poor subwoofer setup, exacerbated by the set's use of heavy sub-bass, experienced a coil short circuit leading to the malfunctions.[10][11] The soundboard was sent out as is without mastering as an apology, and was later re-released with proper mastering.

On August 7th, 2023, Warp sent out an announcement to sign up for to the newsletter.[12] The following day, AE_LIVE 2022- was officially announced,[13] and seven 2022 shows from Milan 2022 to Turin 2022 were released individually and as a compilation on the 10th.[14] A limited run of 250 AE_LIVE_Print 2022 posters were also announced for pre-orders on the 24th, which quickly sold out.[15][16]

On October 25th, 2024, Warp again sent out a newsletter sign-up announcement, with 12 dates listed.[17][18] On November 4th, 2024, twelve sets from Melbourne 2023 to Lyon 2024 were released individually and added onto the now renamed compilation AE_2022-, dropping the "LIVE" part both in the compilation title and sets names.[19] Sean noted that the idea came from Warp to drop the LIVE part of the naming convention.[20]

In a Mastodon thread late 2023, Sean gave an update that the material ended up becoming one long track they just kept adding onto. At that point, it was "about 4 hours long so far and growing steadily", noting it was the "most interesting thing we’ve done in ages from our POV." [21] In an interview in October 2024, they mentioned that "we could keep [the current live shows] going for another ten years."[1]

During a mixlr stream on March 21st, 2020, Sean mentioned in chat that the "live set is 99% complete just need to do the intro."[22] In a later mixlr stream on the 30th while Sean was quickly skimming through their jams folder, he showed off a few seconds of the (then unknown) in-development live material (specifically segments #2, #3 and #5). In December 2022, Sean posted two Max demos to Mastodon; one on December 10th and one on December 15th, which were both bits of segments #29 and #26 respectively. In 2023, two more demos were posted, with July 26th's "Markov Chain" and December 16th's "Fuckery"[23] for segments #38 and #42/47.

The main equipment used for the tour are two M1[4] Macs running Max/MSP, Kenton Killamix controllers, Apogee Symphony Desktop, Apogee Element 24, and Sound Devices 888.[24][25][26][27][28] In 2024, they got four custom-made Killamix Minis.[29] For recording with the 888, they have "two mains, two spares and two mons (adjustable using the headphone pot) going to 3 stereo DIs" with seperate recordings of Sean and Rob's computers alongside a mixed version.[28]

Analysis

Main analysis by Zythion and EnergyIsMassiveLight. Fan titles taken from fan-edit TT2- (AE_LIVE 2022 Exclusives).[30] Officially released sets are highlighted in bold while the unreleased sets with bootleg recordings are italicized.

Due to the nature of performances, some of the splits may includes less of the normal segment (see Sydney 2023's #34) or otherwise start/end with elements from an adjacent segment (see #35 ending including pads that start #36) when they appear at the start and end of sets.

The timestamps below are still a work in progress, thus are not final and are subject to change.

Trivia

  • The CAT number, WARP444, was likely specifically requested by Autechre, to reference the song "444" off their first album, Incunabula.
  • The 2023 compilation cover consisted of all seven individual set art from the first batch overlaid on top of each other.
  • When asked which 2022 show's crowd smelt the best so far, Sean replied "the italians obviously" at Milan 2022.[34]

  4. 4.0 4.1 Sean Twitch AMA, June 2022"“Do you like the new Mac chip situation? Is it any different to work on compared to the old CPU?” Yes. So my patch was using about 75, 80% towards the end of last year or the year before, whenever it was I got it, and then, yeah, I got the M1 and then it was just flying! 30%, just flying! Just absolutely insane! So there's no turning back now I'm fucked because I'm filling it up already. Loads of Live physmod things, and things that were a bit, you know, expensive. So yeah, I love it. Just amazing, kind of a little bit too much if anything, and the disking out speeds are amazing. The transitions are all super tight. The timing's super tight. All the control rate stuff is super tight. So yeah, I think if you're using Max and you've got an M1, you're basically living the dream at this point. it's just insane."
  5. Sean Twitch AMA, June 2022"Basically when COVID hit, I had a lot of time on my hands to rebuild a lot of it. So it's, yeah, it’s a lot of it you wouldn't even notice because a lot of it's just porting things to Gen that didn't need to be ported but just because I wanted a bit more control, and that led me off on loads of tangents because once you start building basic things like oscillators, you get a bit mad with all the options. So yeah, that happened and then I got heavily into MC, and then that happened. And then I built a lot more [physical] modeling stuff, and I did that scratching thing that we used on that Gescom thing that we've done about just over a year ago. And then did that and then, and then, yeah the set sort of grew out of all that tech basically. So sty listically, it's not that far off what we've been doing for the last few years because I think we're still in the same sort of place mentally. But, tech wise, the underlying, the kind of back end stuff is all fresh."
  6. Sean Twitch AMA, June 2022"[...] I mean some, they will share elements and the probably, I mean in all likelihood it'll be mostly similar material but there's a bunch of material that's not aired yet. That's because we've had too long to work on this fucking set, right, so. Least my part of the set is, I don't know, like three and a half hours of stuff, so I don't know how much of it will end up using."
  7. Sean Twitch AMA, June 2022"[...] the problem was with Primavera, they were trying to get rights for everything, right? So they were trying to get broadcast, they were trying to record it, you know? Obviously we're thinking about releasing them, so we didn't want to okay it. We ended up fucking up the recording anyway, so it wouldn't have mattered."

  24. Sean Twitch AMA, July 2022"Can u describe the live setup of the last gigs, laptop, controllers, souncard, thx I mean you know, two, I mean the latest ones are just two M1 Macs, Kenton Killamix controllers, two interfaces; I've got an Apogee Symphony Desktop, Rob's using the Apogee Element 24. The mixer is like a little Mackie Onyx12 channel thing just because it fits on a plane easily, and it's easier to get around. And it's replaceable if it breaks, you know, it's not, we're not relying on some esoteric mixer being found by the promoter at the last minute, so. Because that's always a consideration, you know? There's only the controllers really that be hard to source. So we often carry spares like if we're on a tour bus, we'll have spares of the controllers we’ll source."
  25. Sean Twitch AMA, June 2022"What's your live setup nowadays? Two Macs, and these Kenton Killamix things, and a couple of interfaces."
  26. Hanalgig AMA, July 2022"Tebbisimo: [...] What audio interface you using on the live sets ATM? [...] XH HX: i'm using apogee symphony desktop lately which i really rate but before that was using apogee element 24 (also good but harder to get now) and before that was using RME ADI2 converter (had to stop since apple borked the optical port but i loved that thing). i also got a MOTU M2 which is mad value for ESS sabre converters if u want something cheapish"
