elseq 1-5, often shortened to just elseq, is the twelfth studio album by Autechre released on Warp Records. It was originally released on May 19th, 2016 as both five seperate parts as well as one compilation.
History
elseq was all recorded directly to stereo. SB: Yeah a little maybe. I mean, elseq was kind of made around the same time as the last live set, so those tracks were tracks we didn't use in the live set that we just recorded in the studio. But they were made using the same setup system as the (?) AE_LIVE sets. It's kinda related to that more than it is to the new stuff.}}</ref>

[paragraph about how its in parts, and maybe about the debate over whether it counts as one album, given how its split up on streaming services. Mention how the cat numbers are sequentially WARP512.1/.2/.3/etc… ]
In Autechre: elseq et al, June 2016, Autechre explained much of the background for the record. The store-front was initially set up in collaboration with Warp to just release live shows, before Autechre realised they could also use it for putting out long tracks that were otherwise ill-suited for any proper release, similar to Quaristice.Quadrange.ep.ae. The initial plan was that for any track, they would do a session on Friday, get it approved by Warp, have designs made by The Designers Republic and then put them out by Monday morning. However, Warp instead wanted to package the material into something promotable, which coalesced the tracks into groupings. Sean noted that due to the bizarre format, they didn't know if "it's an album, or a collection of EPs or albums or just... things. We have no idea what this actually is."

[paragraph about sonic textures]
Initially Autechre planned to just throw it onto the store, but Warp wanted to first give a promotional cycle before releasing it. This included debuting "feed1" and "c16 deep tread" as singles before release. elseq 1-5 was released on May 19th, 2016 as a digital-only release, with no plans for a physical release. <!-- elaborate on groupings -->

[paragraph about how they originally just wanted to trickle tracks onto their site when they finished them but warp made them do an “album”. Could we also maybe look into why its divided the way it is, if its only digital it shouldnt matter how long it is. Wtf is it split up? I've literally never questioned this before… Energy here, they divided it up to make it easier for people who aren't autechre-crazy to listen to it lol]

* The main snare sound on "c16 deep tread" was made using subtractive synthesis of oscillator and noise plus frequency shifting with feedback, among other things.

A now-dead SoundCloud upload of it was also provided. I don't even know what it was doing to be honest. I'd have to open it all up again and have a look because, you know, once it's set up and saved, I don't really look at it so. * One theory argues that “elseq” is an abbreviation of “edited live sequences” (or "extended live sequences"), due to the overlap with the material taken from AE_LIVE, meaning it would be pronounced "ell seek". Another theory is that the “5” represents the 5 parts of elseq, whereas the 12 represents it being the twelfth Autechre album.

elseq 1-5, often shortened to just elseq, is the twelfth studio album by Autechre released on Warp Records. It was originally released on May 19th, 2016 as both five seperate parts as well as one compilation.

History

elseq was all recorded directly to stereo[1]. The tracks are all solo tracks, split evenly between Sean and Rob.[2] Many of the tracks that appeared on elseq were made on the same rig used for AE_LIVE.[3]

Sean noted that due to the bizarre format, they didn't know if "it's an album, or a collection of EPs or albums or just... things. We have no idea what this actually is."[4]

Initially Autechre planned to just throw it onto the store, but Warp wanted to first give a promotional cycle before releasing it.[4] This included debuting "feed1" and "c16 deep tread" as singles before release. elseq 1-5 was released on May 19th, 2016 as a digital-only release, with no plans for a physical release.[5]

 • "spaces how V" was done by Rob.[22]
 • The track reused "liveset outtakes practises and proof tests" for material that was performed at the 2010 live shows (example), using both the Nord V2 Rack Engine for the vocal patch and the NMv2e for beats. The longform outtakes ended up in Atoms Vectors Pixels Ghosts™ as well as a project "for a particular municipal historical science and astronomical facility in NYC" which fell through, all of which contributed to the final track.[23]

freulaeux

 • BPM: 137
 • The track title is a reference to Franz Reuleaux that was chosen by Rob because of Reuleaux's work in kinematics.[24][25]

Trivia

 • elseq 1-5 is the only Autechre album to have a title stylized in lowercase.
 • One theory argues that “elseq” is an abbreviation of “edited live sequences” (or "extended live sequences"), due to the overlap with the material taken from AE_LIVE, meaning it would be pronounced "ell seek". During interviews Sean did pronounce it as "ell seek", lending credence to that theory. (who?)
 • The CAT number, WARP512, was likely specifically requested by Autechre. 512 is a power of 2, as are WARP128 (Confield) and WAP256 (Gantz Graf). Another theory is that the “5” represents the 5 parts of elseq, whereas the 12 represents it being the twelfth Autechre album.

 3. RŠ INTERVJU Autechre, Radio Student FM89.3, November 2016"GK: Was it somehow inspired with the last album that, I don't know how is it pronounced, is it elseq? SB: Yeah a little maybe. I mean, elseq was kind of made around the same time as the last live set, so those tracks were tracks we didn't use in the live set that we just recorded in the studio. But they were made using the same setup system as the (?) AE_LIVE sets. It's kinda related to that more than it is to the new stuff."

 14. Sean Twitch AMA, June 2022"How did you make elyc6 0nset, and is it true you made it in one day? Yeah, but I don't know where, I don't think I ever said that to anyone. But yeah, it's true that I made it in a day, yeah."
 15. Hanalgig AMA, July 2022"the elyc stuff was 2014/15 iirc"
 16. Sean Twitch AMA, June 2022"Anything you say about c7b2 sequencing sound engineering? It seems to have a lot of interesting reoccurring themes like the rumbling low end? Yeah, I mean, I don't know what to tell you about it. It's quite, it was quite a few different patches working together, that track. So, a lot of the sort of screamy stuff is sort of delays and something that's a bit like a phaser, but it's getting webbed around quite a lot. So there's a lot of, kind of, I don't know. I don't even know what it was doing to be honest. I'd have to open it all up again and have a look because, you know, once it's set up and saved, I don't really look at it so. But I know roughly which modules were getting used and I know roughly what they would have been doing, so yeah. “I don't know” is the short answer."
