Envane is the fifth EP by Autechre, released by Warp Records on January 27th, 1997.[1]

History

In a 1997 interview with Pulse! magazine, Sean explained that all of the tracks started off from the same basis. However, over the course of their development each track became more and more distinct until they were left completely unrecognizable from each other.

Cover

Designed by The Designers Republic, the cover features a stylized reduction of Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater. The approach was to use the image of the famous building as "a random grid to build an abstract graphic, not a representation or an interpretation of the architecture." The text was constructed in Photoshop using previous iterations of the reduced shapes.[2]

Tracks

Goz Quarter

  • "Goz Quarter" samples Dr. Octagon's "No Awareness", a side project of Kool Keith. The sampled line was confirmed by Kool Keith to be "Watch you jam like Autechre".[3]
  • According to Rob, the scratching on the track was achieved with real vinyl.[4]

Latent Quarter

Laughing Quarter

Draun Quarter

Tracklist

# Title Length
1 Goz Quarter 9:43
2 Latent Quarter 7:37
3 Laughing Quarter 7:05
4 Draun Quarter 10:50
Total 35:15

Trivia

  • The Chiastic Slide track "Nuane" can be read as "Nvane", mirroring Envane.
