Chiastic Slide is the fourth studio album by Autechre released on Warp Records. It was originally released on February 17th, 1997, then later repressed on vinyl in 2021, alongside LP5.

History

In the Sean Twitch AMA, July 2022, he mentioned that a majority of tracks were arranged using the Atari running C-Lab Creator, which they were mainly using up until "halfway through doing Chiastic Slide". They later got Macs running Logic, which was used towards the end of development for the more "basic" tracks.[1] The Casio SK-1 was also used on Chaistic Slide. [2]

60 tracks were made for Chiastic Slide in one year, but only 9 of them ended up on the album. [3]

Cover

The cover art, designed by The Designers Republic, is a collage of simplified abstract shapes using images from a New York trip, specifically "some street-level structural (under the E-train tracks), a shot overlooking the Brooklyn Bridge (probably) from the Empire State Building, and some images found in magazines in hotel lobbies and airline magazines on the flight back (shots of the NASA control room, of white goods junkyards)." [4]

Tracks

Cipater

  • "Cipater" was done on the Atari (C-Lab Creator)

Rettic AC

  • In an interview Sean revealed that this track is the sound of tissue paper being rubbed over a microphone. [5]

Tewe

  • The ending features the purrs of Sean's first cat, Winterbottom.[6]
  • "Tewe" was mostly sequenced on the Roland R8 in a few hours. The melody and bass was both sent to Quadraverb and "played over midi". [7]

Cichli

  • "Cichli" was done in Logic.
  • The track had elements reused for Cichlisuite.
  • The title is likely derived from Cichlid, a family of fish. This fish naming theme was further explored on Cichlisuite.
  • Sean mentioned in the Sean Twitch AMA, June 2022 that he has Boards of Canada's acoustic cover of "Cichli" on cassette. [8]

Hub

Calbruc

Recury

  • "Recury" was done in Logic.
  • The percussion on "Recury" are all heavily processed "homemade sampler stuff." [9]
  • The title is likely a play on "Reoccurring"

Pule

Nuane

  • "Nuane" was done on the Atari (C-Lab Creator)
  • A slightly modified version of the title was possibly used for Envane (Nvane).
  • "Nuane" uses a groove template.[11]
